The third meeting of MegaFlorestais was held on October 26-31, 2008, at several sites in Brazil: its opening session was held in the nation’s capital, Brasilia; then in Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. The meeting was hosted by the Brazilian Forest Service, in collaboration with the Rights and Resources Initiative. Seventeen delegates came from ten countries: Austria, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Congo, China, Indonesia, Peru, Russia and the USA.

Building on lessons learned from the previous two MegaFlorestais meetings, the 2008 sessions provided a combination of briefings on the current state of the global forest sector and formal and informal discussions between participants. It was held at a strategic moment right before the XIV meeting of the UNFCCC COP in Poznań, Poland.

Field trip: Visit of forestry and milling operations of the Precious Woods-Amazonas near Itacoatiara, Manaus

The visit of the Precious Woods-Amazonas (PWA), located outside Itacoataria, was led by the Sustainability Director of PWA, in conjunction with experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other entities. Discussions focused on the environmental and economic outcomes of traditional and low-impact logging.
